  1. You forgot Anthony Nesty from Surinam, who beat Matt Biondi and became the first black race swimmer to win a gold medal in Seoul in 1.988.

  2. how about the 2016 rio olympics where joseph schooling beat out michael phelps for the gold with three joint silvers ??

  3. I smell some serious American bias in this, I agree with all who revert to as the swimming race of the ages , Thorpe vs Phelps, vs hoogie and popov

  4. I was hoping to see Shane Gould on here for holding every freestyle world record from 50-1500m at the same time.

  5. Typically, almost only American swimmers. Typical American exceptionalism.!

  6. Sydney 2000 Ion Thorpe vs Peter Vanden Hogenband 100m and 200m free style and Rematch in Athenas 2004 100 & 200m !

  7. maybe change the title to 10 races that changed US swimming forever. Outstanding the number of swimmers that were not included that have impacted swimming that deserve to be in the top 10. But USA is the world right?

  8. Stunned to see no mention of Mark Spitz. But talking about swimming history without mentioning Johnny Weismuller is like talking about baseball history and leaving out Babe Ruth.

  9. 8:02 That's Duke Kahanamoku, a swimming legend in his own right with 5 Olympic medals, 3 of them gold. He later popularized surfing for the mainstream audience.

  10. Sounds more like the SJWs list of races that changed the world. First "woman this", "first African American that", "inclusive", "diverse" LOL. Everything these days is seen through the lense or race and gender. How about actually showing races that changes swimming as a sport. People's gender and race are irrelevant. Yikes.

  11. Kieren Perkins being the first man in history to win back to back 1500m freestyle titles at the Olympics.

  12. Tracey Wickham's 400m WR that stood for 10 years.

  13. The invention of Butterfly … originally a variation in breaststroke.
Also the introduction of Australian Crawl or "overarm" to replace sidestroke in freestyle races. That surely must be the swim race that changed swimming forever.

  14. Anthony Nesty definitely deserves a place in a video entitled Swim Races that Changed Swimming Forever. He's a legend. Check out his performances.

  15. Carolyn Woods – Rome 1960 – the women's 100m Butterfly final. She was favourite to win, but on the turn she surfaced and literally breathed in 2 full lungs of water. She nearly drowned. it was due to the lane ropes not absorbing the wash. After that FINA introduced the wave-breaking lane ropes that we now regard as standard. It's not a great win, but it was certainly a race that changed swimming forever.

  16. 2000 Sydney 4 x 100m Mens Freestyle Relay.
Shane Gould & Mark Spitz at Munich.
Steven Holland forgetting to stop at the end of a world record 1500.
    Anthony Nesty.
Ian Thorpe's first 400m World Championship win – gave Grant Hackett 3 seconds on the last 100m and at least 2 seconds at the last turn.
Oh – and Dawn Fraser – she was named swimmer of the century … You might want to look her up some time.

Like dude – you do know there are countries that compete in swimming other than USAUSAUSAUSA?

  17. According to this video (the history of) swimming should be made only of US athletes? Shame on you
