    We all know that balance in freestyle is one of the most important things to work on.

    Balance allows you to rotate the hips, torso, the shoulders all very cleanly

    and at the same time harness the power of the body and the pull

    and lead for a great extension forward cutting through the water making the best body line possible.

    So we're going to look at a fun way that we use, something different to help teach core stability.

    What we found that works well are SCUBA weights.

    You can find them on-line or in any SCUBA shop.

    And these are 3 pound SCUBA weights that generally tied to the hips or the ankles of a SCUBA diver.

    The great news is that they're waterproof.

    But again,

    at 3 pounds each, thus 6 pounds of weight at the front of the stroke.

    What the swimmer is trying to do is to maintain a very straight arm line from the shoulders to the hands, as well as from the hips shoulders and all the way forward.

    And so this additional weight held out front thus put some strain on the core.

    And after they've done it for a little bit

    they simply drop the weights and try to maintain this line.

    So that's, what you're looking for right there is the exact same line.

    The arms don't fall, they don't rise.

    But you're really trying to build that very stable line with the additional pressure of the weights.

    And then drop the weights and maintain that line.

    After the swimmer has dropped the weights

    she will gradually approach the surface.

    So very slowly approach the surface.

    And then get into her first break-out stroke

    focusing again on that line and extension forward

    making sure that the core is very rigid and everything is connected together.

    So after the dropping of the weights, again, very slow incline up to the surface for the breakout into extension.

    The fun part about it is that it can also be used for breaststroke kick to work on the extended line forward,

    as we would love to see all of our swimmers be in this line.

    But of course much closer to the surface of the water in-between every stroke.

    So a lot of swimmers will allow the arms to drop,

    so the weights building association of this direct line forward on each stroke,

    and then as the swimmer drops the weights, again, maintaining that line.

    So it's fun for breaststroke as well.

Hi there, thank you for the tip and the great clip, but i think The weigts has no meaning in this exercise and doesnt give any extra to learning stability: why do we need it, if we have all the components in our body to exercise stability in water on swimming ? to keep that ballance – all you need is to exercise the ballance between gravity point and floating point in our body. the weight – just changes and moves the points of gravity and foating, and has no contribution to understand those points in our body (which what we need). i've learned it from someone who is water engineer and a swimming coach too, who was also a professionat swimmer, who knows about hydrodynamics and how body moves most effeciently and quick in water.
