  2. SCULLING – Overhead Scull

I learned it long time ago that

when an elite athlete shows me how they did something

I just watched rather than trying to give my two cents on something.

When I ask Kevin Clements to perform overhead scull,

he didn’t ask how, he just took off.

    In doing so,

he did this subtle movement different than I had done it for years, and how I taught it for years.

While I perform this drill with both hands at the same time,

    Kevin alternatives hands

and creates a consistent smooth flow down the pool.

In my own revisiting of this skill,

I found it really cool to do it like Kevin.

    Why do it :

Just like in the other sculling drills,

learning how your hands work in all angles is a good thing.

    How to do it :

Push off feet first on your back.

Here either need you to push off the wall with your hands,

or push off and flip to your feet first position.

Lean back in with your upper back to keep your hips up.

    And point your toes.

Now, sweep your hands back and forth above your head as shown by Kevin.

Keep the movements small and quick.

Feel the stability in your body and head position,

keeping just a bit of your face above the water to breathe with.

How to do it really well (the fine points):

Fast, quick, small movements with the hands is a key point of this.

Think about feeling the tips of your fingers whipping through the water.

And remember to point them down toward the bottom just a bit,

or you'll just be sweeping your hands and not moving anywhere.

You'll discover quickly pointing your toes and keeping your body in line will help tremendously.

Cutting the smallest hole in the water is a huge thing to remember.

    With hardly any forward propulsion,

    balance and a streamlined position

is about the only way you'll even move.

You may also discover that you need smooth water to learn this drill in.

Small ripples of water tend to find a way up your nose very quickly.
