What app do you use
You pull with high elbow not because of increase surface area. Your arm is always the same size nevermind the shape. You pull with high elbow because your upper part of arm moves forward because it is closely connected to the body. Putting it in the line of the body you decrease drag. Garry Hall seniour described it very well.
Pulling with straight arm you have more power pulling the water because the shoulder is in mechanical powerfull position rather than in high elbow position. The downside is increased drag, therefore you only see that technique used in sprint events.
