  1. I am not built much for the water. Finally I can swim but I freak out when I dive. I will keep trying.

  3. Enjoyed this video, thumbs up from us and cheers from sunny IGY Simpson Bay Marina, Sint Maarten in the Caribbean.

    00:00:05,290 –> 00:00:08,679
If you've always wanted to learn how to do a racing dive off the blocks,

    2
    00:00:08,679 –> 00:00:11,519
or if you've ever tried to teach someone how to dive off the blocks,

    3
    00:00:11,520 –> 00:00:14,460
here's a fun drill that is step #1 in the learning process.

    4
    00:00:14,700 –> 00:00:15,540
    Why do it:

    5
    00:00:16,000 –> 00:00:21,460
When swimmers especially young swimmers are learning to dive, they often have trouble controlling their legs.

    6
    00:00:21,700 –> 00:00:27,160
This young swimmer enters the water with his arms in streamline. But his legs flip up just as they enter.

    7
    00:00:27,820 –> 00:00:33,820
When the legs flip up like this it's like opening a huge parachute, just at the point when you're going the fastest.

    8
    00:00:34,580 –> 00:00:40,420
Your racing dives will be faster, cleaner, and a lot more comfortable, if you can learn to control your legs and feet.

    9
    00:00:40,740 –> 00:00:45,020
The idea is to hold your legs in streamline and everything slips through one hole in the water .

    10
    00:00:45,220 –> 00:00:50,440
This drill which is step 1 in a 4-part series will help you learn to control your legs and feet.

    11
    00:00:50,640 –> 00:00:56,080
It will help you develop a nice clean entry with your hands, torso, and feet, all in streamline.

    12
    00:00:57,560 –> 00:01:01,580
Get a Noodle. Many pools have these on deck for water-aerobics classes.

    13
    00:01:01,590 –> 00:01:05,530
But if not, you can find one in your local discount store for a couple of dollars.

    14
    00:01:06,640 –> 00:01:09,420
Stand in the shallow end and place the noodle out in front of you.

    15
    00:01:09,560 –> 00:01:12,620
Make sure the water is at least up to your waist when you try this.

    16
    00:01:13,020 –> 00:01:15,520
Take a big breath and dive over the noodle.

    17
    00:01:16,780 –> 00:01:19,840
Try to send your hands over and down toward the bottom.

    18
    00:01:20,760 –> 00:01:25,460
If you send your hands out toward the other end, you may end up landing on the noodle with your stomach.

    19
    00:01:26,360 –> 00:01:29,040
You're wanting your stomach up and over the noodle.

    20
    00:01:29,760 –> 00:01:33,520
Next, focus on getting your legs and feet to slide over the noodle.

    21
    00:01:33,960 –> 00:01:40,640
Notice how the swimmer keeps her legs together and her toes pointed, and how have her feet and legs seem to flow right over the noodle.

    22
    00:01:41,100 –> 00:01:45,420
This swimmer is now doing a better job of getting over the noodle. And his feet are together.

    23
    00:01:45,800 –> 00:01:50,240
But he'll get a cleaner entry ,if he can point his toes as they slip across the noodle.

    24
    00:01:50,500 –> 00:01:53,460
Here's a good image that you can take to the pool when you practice.

    25
    00:01:54,100 –> 00:01:57,380
Remember to dive up and over and down into the water.

    26
    00:01:58,020 –> 00:02:03,060
You'll get a cleaner entry, if your toes are pointed, and if you let them just slide over the noodle.

    27
    00:02:03,580 –> 00:02:07,740
Hey! Just try it. Have some fun. And come back next week for step 2.

  6. Do I have to dive to be underwater? what if I just submerged my entire body would it be possible to swim underwater and not float in the surface immediately? Is there a way to do so?

  7. Looks like you need really strong legs to jump that high out of the water. I cant jump that high out of the water. What kind of exercises you need to do to get such spring loaded legs ???

  8. Oh if it were only that simple. While I appreciate what you're trying to boil it down to, it's never so easy. The comment "jump as FAR as you can", isn't the norm these days, especially for the high level athletes. Thanks for the comment, but also understand, this series is for those who may not have done starts from the blocks before. Starting simple is a good idea.

  9. @curtischancx3 if you dont have googles then dont swim

  10. gah my feet do that!

  11. Well at the summer therez A swimming pool at the YMCA but im scared and im 11 and never dived before and The ymca DOSENT have them

  12. @curtischancx3 Not sure why that would be a problem. There's really no problem diving without goggles, we used to swim our races without goggles, and many people have a hard time with them. Just get used to swimming short distances with your eyes open underwater. Sure, the chlorine will burn after a bit, but that's part of swimming without them.

  13. wow thank you sooo mutch im new to diving off the block so to am i new to diving! thanks a million!
