    00:00:01,627 –> 00:00:05,499
    Turns – Flip-Turn Eyes

    2
    00:00:05,850 –> 00:00:08,642
One of the most common actions in our sport is the flip turn.

    3
    00:00:09,095 –> 00:00:13,441
Depending on how you accomplish this action, you're either making your life easier… or harder.

    4
    00:00:14,272 –> 00:00:14,819
    Why do it:

    5
    00:00:15,200 –> 00:00:20,036
Because you want faster turns, you need to make sure you're traveling the shortest distance during your turn.

    6
    00:00:20,306 –> 00:00:22,335
And it all starts with where you're looking.

    7
    00:00:24,075 –> 00:00:24,699
    How to do it:

    8
    00:00:24,977 –> 00:00:27,193
Before you start doing your turns, check out the wall.

    9
    00:00:27,632 –> 00:00:32,936
You'll probably see some markings or features of the wall that can be a reference point when you're going into your turn.

    10
    00:00:33,271 –> 00:00:35,191
In the pool that we swim in each morning,

    11
    00:00:35,521 –> 00:00:36,982
    you'll notice an aluminum edge,

    12
    00:00:37,147 –> 00:00:39,732
then a line where the wall and the aluminum edge meet,

    13
    00:00:40,031 –> 00:00:43,252
and also the ledge that we place our feet on when we stand at the wall.

    14
    00:00:44,139 –> 00:00:49,368
After becoming a bit more familiar with the pool's wall, do some turns experimenting with where you look.

    15
    00:00:50,020 –> 00:00:57,769
If you're looking directly at the wall or at the line at the end of the wall, you're probably traveling in too big of a circle, while making your turn too long.

    16
    00:00:59,082 –> 00:01:02,593
To travel in a smaller circle and shorten your turn, look lower.

    17
    00:01:04,635 –> 00:01:07,592
In our case we look at the ledge where we rest our feet.

    18
    00:01:08,070 –> 00:01:11,058
This means you'll be part way through your turn sooner than you used to.

    19
    00:01:11,981 –> 00:01:14,017
How to do it really well(the fine points):

    20
    00:01:14,710 –> 00:01:19,499
The next time you watch other swimmers do flip turns, watch for the humpback as they approach the wall.

    21
    00:01:21,705 –> 00:01:25,750
If the swimmer is lunging up prior to going down into the turn, they're wasting time.

    22
    00:01:27,057 –> 00:01:31,322
Refer to the drill learned from Cal coach Dave Durden for a bit more information on this.

    23
    00:01:33,374 –> 00:01:38,708
Become more familiar with where you're looking as you approach the wall, and look lower.

    24
    00:01:39,018 –> 00:01:45,238
Hopefully by starting your turn with eyes lower, you will shorten the distance you travel during your turn and make your turns faster.

  3. iv got a question, when do i have to breathe in and out if im doing the turn? thanks!

  7. @RODOLFITO2241 – Excellent, and thanks for posting. Keep going, and look for a drill called "late hands flip". That seems to help as well.
